From 8 to 10 May some of our experts will be at the Emerging Fuels Symposium in Athens, Greece. Simon Slater will talk about the joint work of EFO (Emerging Fuel Institute) to create Consensus Engineering Requirements (CERs) for #hydrogen and hydrogen blend #pipelines. "The CERs will be added to ASME B31.8 in 2026 as a new appendix for #hydrogen pipelines, replacing the section on pipelines in ASME B31.12. I'm excited to discuss the differences in expectations for hydrogen production in the U.S. compared to other regions over the next 10 years. Catching up with friends and colleagues from around the world over a beer and good food is always special!" Our colleague Sameera Naib will be there on behalf of the YPP, along with two other young pipeline professionals from Australia and the US, to share their perspective: "There is a generational gap in the industry and we need to actively engage to maintain critical knowledge. In addition, #climatechange messages for young professionals are an important concern and #diversity in a panel discussion needs to be improved. As this is my first time in Athens, I would like to take a quick tour and enjoy the history. As a student of philosophy, I want to see the place where the father of Western philosophy lived. I am looking forward to meeting several experts from the industry in person, especially those who have been involved in H2 research, as well as exchanging views on the following topics: hydrogen #materialtesting and hydrogen pipeline #integrityassessment". #empoweredbytechnology EPRG - European Pipeline Research Group

The evaluation of #EMAT in-line #inspectiondata is a challenging task that requires experienced data analysts and extended training. Multiple information channels need to be combined and analyzed simultaneously. A significant part of the evaluation process is the analysis and interpretation of data patterns, which results in detection, classification and sizing of #pipeline features. Therefore, the interpretation of EMAT inspection data can be viewed as a complex pattern recognition problem statement. It is of utmost importance that the overall analysis process conducted by the data analyst achieves the highest possible levels of quality and repeatability. In recent years, supervised machine learning, and especially deep learning has emerged as the dominating technique to tackle such pattern recognition tasks computationally. Extended depth sizing has become almost a prerequisite for modern in-line #ultrasonic #crack testing. Conventional #depthsizing is based on the amplitude of the direct echo signal - a corner echo reflected from the flaw on the nearest pipe wall surface. The main limitation of the direct echo approach is the signal saturation of deep flaws, so that discrete depth sizing is not possible for #anomalies deeper than 4 mm. The new method of extended depth sizing offers several advantages for the operator's subsequent #integritymanagement. Our experts Abdullahi Atto, Thomas Beuker and Lukas Klinge gave a presentation on this topic at the #PTC2024 in Berlin entitled "Extra-High Resolution UTCD Solution for Small Diameter #Pipelines - Introducing Extended Depth Sizing", where they explained the concept of #UTCD depth sizing based on indirect echo, presented the results of a corresponding full-scale performance qualification and and discussed the limitations of the depth sizing based on indirect echo and the associated risk of confusion between direct and indirect #echoes that could lead to depth oversizing.
